Great Mountain Light at Zugspitze Alps, Austria

Please have a look at the new page, it's still brand new but will be updated regularly from now on. I found this photo to be quite fitting for this occasion. It was taken at dawn from the top of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. It's a very popular tourist destination and can be quite crowded during day time. So I decided to take on of the few special sunrise rides on top of the mountain which are offered from the Austrian side during summer time. Going up there so early and waiting patiently for the sun to glimpse across the majestic mountain landscape was an effort but still well worth it. At that time only a few photographers were defying the freezing cold outside and it made the atmosphere even more special. While the view was absolutely breathtaking it presented me with a formidable challenge to photograph it properly. I was first concentrating on a horizontal composition which usually works best for landscapes. It seemed somehow unbalanced though. When the sun finally appeared on the horizon I was unsatisfied with the photos I took and abandoned this view, photographing the mountain range in the other direction instead. But then, maybe 30 minutes later or so, I remembered the previous view and thought I should try out a vertical composition instead. I went back and immediately recognized how much better it looked and began shooting. Finally the photos reflected the majesty of the place. My only regret was that that I didn't try out the vertical composition earlier.
